Bachelor

Bachelor Thesis - Slow Transformation | BSc.

The dMA department has been working for several semesters on reversible and discrete construction systems, in which small building blocks can be assembled into large constructions and also easily taken apart again. This type of designing and constructing has been continuously developed in BSc. theses, prototypes, and projects.

Projects

Studio Project - Robots are the Answer | MSc.

In the project, students are first practically and theoretically introduced to the fundamental methods of architectural robotics. This is achieved by utilizing the experience gathered by the Department of Digital Methods in Architecture (dMA) over the past years and by inviting experts who will present and discuss their approach to using robots in architectural projects. The aim of the first part is to understand the design and construction potentials of various robotic methods. This is done through a series of practical exercises on creative engagement with robots.

Short Project - Assembled | BSc./MSc.

This course focuses on architectures that are assembled of small parts, constructively contrasting with the monolithic concrete modernism. This includes examples from Antiquity, Brick Gothic, as well as wood and steel construction. The motivation for this focus is the necessity to construct buildings in a pure-grade manner, to enable future transformation and deconstruction.

Elective Modules

Seminar - Digital Design | BSc./MSc.

Digital design methods are learned using iconic examples from digital architecture and are integrated into a broader architectural discourse. Parametric design using Grasshopper will be explored in depth, as well as interfaces with drawing and modelling software.

Seminar - Creative AI | BSc./MSc.

With the advent of AI image generators, since 2022, designers and the general public have had access to a technology that makes the visual representation of architectural designs no longer dependent on the ability to sketch by hand or the expertise to build and visualize 3D models in CAD.

Seminar - Robots in Architecture | BSc./MSc.

With our robotic infrastructure at the Chair of Digital Methods in Architecture, we aim to explore the benefits of integrating collaborative robotic manipulators with an autonomous mobile robotic platform. The goal is to investigate potential applications and navigation methods for the platform in the architectural context.

Seminar - VRoxel | BSc./MSc.

The seminar aims to provide an introduction to a range of digital design technologies, particularly Virtual Reality (VR), and utilize them for the creation of complex, small-scale architectures in existing structures. The existing structures are measured with millimeter precision using laser scanning and used as a digital context for designing.

Seminar - Master Thesis Preparation | MSc.

The seminar offers the opportunity to prepare for an MSc. Thesis at the dMA department. At the beginning of the semester, texts and protagonists are discussed together and presented in papers. The reading includes architectural historians such as Mario Carpo, architects such as Greg Lynn and pioneers of cybernetics such as Max Bense.

Seminar - BIM Process | MSc.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has become indispensable in some areas of construction, while it is only just being introduced in others. It is beyond question, and almost all experts agree, that planning, construction, and operation of buildings using an information-rich digital model will be the only method of building in the future.
