Bachelor Thesis - Place of a million parts

Place of a Million Parts

Bachelor Thesis - BSc.

Against the backdrop of the automation of construction, the thesis explores the question: how do we design, build and live in a building made of millions of tiny building blocks? Using the example of an urban café, the possibilities of a sustainable, changeable tectonics are investigated in which material can be continuously reconfigured by swarms of small robots.

For the thesis, digital methods are provided that allow the design of an architecture of highest resolution and detail with such a large number of parts. The focus of the thesis is on the design elaboration, with its visualisations taking a central position. The specific methods for design, visualisation and illustration are taught in the thesis seminar accompanying the class.

Prerequisites for the BSc. thesis are knowledge of Rhino (Mediale Architekturdarstellung / Digitale Methoden II) and the successful completion of one other course of the Digital Methods Department. Licences for Rhino and VRay are provided.

The work begins with an exercise in which students develop an architectural detail on a scale of 1:1 from 10,000 Lego bricks.
