Robots are the Answer ... refers to the quote by the architect Ceric Price: "Technology is the answer, but what was the question" (1966).
In the project, we first provide a practical and theoretical introduction to the basic methods of architectural robotics. To this end, we will on the one hand use the experience that the department for Digital Methods in Architecture (dMA) has gained in recent years and on the other hand invite experts to present and discuss their working methods with robots on architectural projects. The aim of the first part is to understand the design and construction potential of the different robotic methods. This will be done through a series of practical exercises on the creative use of robots.
In the second part, all participants will develop a building design based on a selected robotic method. This will also address the fundamental question: "Why should we use robots in architecture?" The design should provide a concrete answer to this question.
Basic knowledge of Rhinoceros-3D/Grasshopper is helpful but not a prerequisite. Assistance with special in-depth digital methods will be given in tutorials. Particularly in the first part, practical work is done with the dMA robots.
Supervision takes place in weekly revisions and two colloquia in the faculty. In addition to technical support, some texts on the conceptual classification of the project are handed out and discussed.
