Robots in Architecture

Seminar - BSc./MSc.

Class

Today we are seeing the dawn of robots in multiple fields: Car manufacturing, house cleaning, war fronts, warehouses, surgery rooms. Architecture is no exception: from universities to construction sites, robots are becoming ever more present in design and construction.

This seminar will take advantage of dMAs UR5 collaborative robot. It will investigate how these machines are able to transform architecture, both in construction and as a discipline. Participants will be introduced to robotic control with Rhino/Grasshopper by making machinic calligraphies. They will advance to develop volumetric architectural elements through experimental building techniques, like automatically placing building elements and cutting blockwork.

As a final product participants will create prototypes of architectural elements which exhibit the design and construction potential of robotic fabrication. An introduction to Rhino/Grasshopper will be provided.
