The Design of a Human

Elective module

Course

This course focuses on the close observation and understanding of the “figure in space” and the recording (via drawing) of these observations.

We will study the design of the human body, its proportions and weight when standing, sitting, lying, and in motion. Through drawing, we will observe the interaction between body and space.

Beginning with a study of proportions, we will use this knowledge to develop figures and sequences of motion through drawing and modeling.

The investigation of proportion will continue through the study of individual body parts such as the torso, head, hands, and feet.

The knowledge gained from this research will then finally be applied to drawing a live model.

Our drawing research will be accompanied by the consideration of a selection of historical, modern, and contemporary representations of nudes and human figures in combination with architecture of the same period.
