Fictional Spaces — Building as Self-portrait

Elective module

Course

Using selected short stories by writers like J. G. Ballard, J. L. Borges, and Italo Calvino, we will investigate architecture in fiction as a starting point for an experimental artistic engagement. We will work on assignments and exercises that are meant to help discover and develop an individual artistic language. The basis will be drawing and sculpture; other media can also be investigated. At the same time, we will report on artistic approaches ( e.g. Louise Bourgeois, Mark Manders, Absalon) that use architectonic means/images to develop an artistic language, thereby expressing a personal condition. In the second half of the semester, participants will build on the exercises to create their own artistic works.
