Picturing Letters

The invented word “Bildstaben” (derived from “image” + “to spell”) contains the program of this course in a nutshell. We will investigate the possibilities of using the letters of our alphabet as a starting point for artistic works. We will design artistic objects in all three spatial dimensions whose appearance is defined by an ambivalence between letter and image. In exercises with concrete requirements, we will feel our way from surfaces to reliefs to sculptural objects and spatial installations.

In the second phase of the semester, participants will create a stand-alone artistic project based on typographical source materials. In the process, other forms of artistic expression including phonetic, performative, and participative concepts can be integrated.
