Course
In this seminar we will deal intensively with data as an artistic material. According to norm DIN 44300 Nr. 19, data is “structures of signs […], predominantly for the purpose and as the result of processing.” The columns of numbers and symbols that constitute data often contain a poetic quality or hidden insights.
Using maps, telephone books, election statistics, 3-D data, weather records, or social media posts we will develop our own artistic works that extract and develop out of the raw material a sensually perceptible core. The medium can be freely chosen. The technique can also be purely analog. The practical exercises will be influenced by our engagement with works that use data as raw material by contemporary artists such as Hanna Darboven, John Cage, On Kawara, Francis Alÿs, and Karin Sander.
