Univ. Prof. Dr. Michael Ulrich Hensel is an EUList Professor (part-time) for Architecture and Environment Integration at the Faculty of Architecture and Landscape at Leibniz University Hannover. He isfull-time professor at EUList Partner TU Wien, where he leads the Research Department for Digital Architecture and Planning (DAP),and the Competence Centre for AI in Architecture, Planning, and Environment (AI|APE). Previously he was professor at Oslo School of Architecture and Design in Norway (2008 – 2018) where he directed the Research Centre for Architecture and Tectonics (RCAT). From 1993 to 2009 he taught at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. His teaching strategy is characterised by research-based-learning and -teaching. Teaching includes general aspects of research and research methodology to engender evidence-based designs such as the H2020 FET project ECOLOPES.
His work is internationally widely published and cited including seminal works such as Performance-oriented Architecture: Rethinking Architectural Design and the Built Environment (Wiley, 2013), Emergent Technologies and Design: Towards a Biological Paradigm for Architecture (Routledge, 2010), Grounds and Envelopes (Routledge, 2015), and Restructuring Material Thinking (Birkhäuser, 2015). He is also series editor of the Designing Environments book series by Springer Nature.
During his tenure at Leibniz University Hannover over the next 5 years he will work closely with the chair for Digital Methods in Architecture, Prof. Mirco Becker, where he will conduct research based design studios based on an interdisciplinary and multi-scalar approach to developing and evaluating sustainable and equitable urban future scenarios.
