Robots in Architecture

Seminar - BSc./MSc.

Class

Robots, like computers, are generic programmable machines. Their movement is programmed via software, their function programmed by equipping them with specific hardware tools like: grippers, paint brushes, mills, extruders and many more. Giving them a task is an act of design

During the 3rd industrial revolution in the 1980s robots became common place in factories to automate repetitive tasks, one robot per task. Today we are seeing robots equipped with senses that adapt to their environment and work along humans in a collaborative fashion, always able adjust and even learn. They are no longer bound to factories but start to enter all aspects of life, and architecture is not an exception.

In the context of the seminar "Robots in Architecture" a compact intensive robot workshop will be offered to students in the summer semester 2020. It will take place from 17.08 - 28.08.2020 in the institute's own Robot Lab and the adjacent workrooms. The aim is to introduce students to the handling and control of the robot arm for design projects.

Under the title "High Resolution Architecture" future design concepts and manufacturing strategies will be researched and developed with regard to their complexity and resolution.

Prerequisites for participation are knowledge in Rhino and Grasshopper as well as the Grasshopper-Plugin Robots (video tutorials from dMA). In addition, conceptual considerations on modular structures and their properties should be worked on in advance in the form of online exercises.

The chair for digital Methods in Architecture has developed a hygiene concept for the workshop in order to minimize the risk of infection.
