Christina Varvia will be presenting a selection of Forensic Architecture’s most recent work. In tandem with Markus Miessen, she will discuss today’s relevance of spatial design tools in the reading and remaking of our contemporary (political) reality.

Christina Varvia, currently a Research Fellow, was formerly the Deputy Director and Lead Researcher of Forensic Architecture (FA). She was trained as an architect at the Architectural Association (AA) and Westminster University, and has taught a Diploma unit (MArch) at the AA (2018-2020). She was a member of the Technology Advisory Board for the International Criminal Court (2018). Currently, Christina is pursuing her PhD at Aarhus University where her research focuses on biopolitics and imaging of the human body. She has received the Novo Nordisk Foundation Mads Øvlisen PhD Scholarship for Practice-based Artistic Research, and is also a Fellow at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.

Markus Miessen is an architect, researcher, and writer. He received his PhD from the Centre for Research Architecture/ Forensic Architecture at Goldsmiths, London, supervised by Eyal Weizman, Keller Easterling, and Chantal Mouffe. His work revolves around questions of critical spatial practice, institution building, and spatial politics. Markus has previously taught at the AA (London, UK), Städelschule (Frankfurt, DE), USC Los Angeles, and has been a Harvard Fellow. Amongst many other books and writings, he is the author of “The Nightmare of Participation” and “Crossbenching”. His design practice, Studio Miessen, works closely with a number of artists such as Hito Steyerl and Flaka Haliti, and is currently involved in the spatial re-conceptualization of the Gropius Bau Berlin. The studio has realised projects for clients such as Artsonje (Seoul), Bergen Assembly, Berlin Biennale, IMA Brisbane, Istanbul Biennale, Performa Biennial (New York), Serpentine Gallery (London), The Art Institute of Chicago, and Witte de With (Rotterdam), amongst others.
