TypoBasics. Character & Cliché

Elective module

Course

The typographic term “cliché” derives from the French word “cliché” and refers to a reproduction of an original, serving as a general term for all types of printing plates. Colloquially, a cliché refers to an idea, saying, or stylistic device that was once innovative but now seems outdated. A cliché exists as something intellectually or linguistically formulaic.

In the workshop “Types & Clichés,” we explore the fundamentals of typographic design against the backdrop of social contexts. We examine a self-selected “cliché” on formal-aesthetic and linguistic levels and develop our own typographic project based on it. Navigating the tension between manual and digital work, we will explore the fundamentals of typography: technical terms, the history of typefaces, classification of typefaces, microtypography, and the application of type in digital media.
