“The act of walking is to the urban system what the speech act is to language or to the statements uttered.” – Michel de Certeau (The Practice of Everyday Life)
We explore walking in architectural and urban spaces. How does walking structure orientation, perception, and social relationships—and thereby shape the way we use and experience spaces? How can the mostly invisible patterns and logics of action be made perceptible and thus negotiable?
To this end, we investigate how the deliberate setting of rules provokes unconventional paths of walking in space—in terms of route, pace, orientation, or social positioning. Based on our own experience and observation, we develop interventions, performative and graphic interventions, instructions for action, and sculptural objects.
These interrupt everyday routines and make spatial, social, and affective conditions visible.
We will present and discuss the results of this block course during a joint closing event with the course “Material Confusions” and guests.
