Elective module
Course
Image-generating AI is closer to painting than to photography—it is not a representation, but a pure construction.
How can we develop new forms of expression with the help of image-generating AI? Does it help us unleash our creativity, or does it limit us with generic anti-aesthetics?
What is actually new about AI-generated images, and how are they created? But above all: What can we do with them?
Can these technical images be further developed using painterly techniques? Do they serve merely as templates, or can the mechanics behind the AI be revealed through painterly action and become part of the image’s content themselves?
What artistic statements can be made through the medium of AI at all? These questions are the focus of this course, both in theoretical and practical work.
The course consists of 7 full-day sessions. The mornings are devoted to theory, and the afternoons to practice. We will paint using high-quality inks. A material fee of 15 euros will be charged. You will also need access to an image-generating AI such as Midjourney or Stable Diffusion (the latter is available for free via GitHub, but requires a fast computer, which may incur additional costs).
