Elective module
Elective module
“My mind is going... I can feel it.”
(HAL 9000 during his disconnection, 2001: A Space Odyssey, 1968)
The lecture hall is turning into a movie theater again!
We will watch selected films by director Stanley Kubrick and explore his visual worlds and cinematic architecture. Special attention will be given to the evolution of Kubrick’s work. Which motifs recur? How has his work changed over time? And how do his films, made several decades ago, affect us today?
The following films will be screened: 2001: A Space Odyssey, 1968; The Killing, 1956; Barry Lyndon, 1975; Dr. Strangelove, 1964; Paths of Glory, 1957; Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, 1980; and A Clockwork Orange, 1971.
Each session, we will watch a film together. In between sessions, we will delve deeper into what we have seen through supplementary texts, film analyses, and documentaries. A continuous film diary will accompany our exploration through drawings and written reflections.
The films require close attention, present a cinematic challenge, and invite repeated viewings. They contain explicit scenes of psychological and physical violence; this should be taken into account when selecting the seminar. All films are shown in their original English with German subtitles.
