Excursion to the Ruhr region: 4–8 August 2026
In 2026, the Ruhr region will host Manifesta 16. From June to October, the biennial will take place in twelve vacant post-war churches spread across the host cities of Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen and Bochum.
Under the title ‘This is not a church’, artists, architects, experts and local initiatives will work together with local residents to explore the spatial, social and cultural potential of these vacant sacred buildings and their surroundings. The buildings will be temporarily transformed into spaces for art, encounter and collective imagination.
Manifesta is a European travelling biennial that takes place every two years in partnership with a selected host city or region. Its site-specific approach is a defining feature: socio-spatial contexts are explored through a dialogue between contemporary art, architecture and urbanism. The biennial’s public programme, comprising experimental exhibition formats, spatial interventions, discussion forums and workshops, brings to light the results of an extensive research and participatory process.
During the five-day excursion, we will travel to all four host cities, visit the venues of Manifesta 16 Ruhr, experience artistic urban exploration and experimental processes of transformation, and thus encounter the historically and spatially complex Ruhr region.
