Excursion: Bremerhaven!

Excursion

Course

This excursion takes us to the exclave of the “Free Hanseatic City of Bremen,” founded in 1827. For a long time, Bremerhaven was Europe’s largest port of departure for emigrants heading to America, to the “New World.” Many people’s fates are intertwined with the city. Otherwise, it is known primarily for its port, which remains economically significant to this day.

We travel by train toward the sea, like countless tourists in the summer, and document this journey through drawings.

In addition to shipyards, port facilities from various eras, and massive container loading stations for global trade, museums and exhibition spaces—designed by renowned architects, among others—were built from scratch or integrated into existing structures in Bremerhaven starting in the 1960s. Diverse museum concepts showcase art and history and convey research on climate, shipping, and migration. We visit some museums—others we merely walk around—and draw comparisons. Exploring the urban structure, port facilities, and city beach on foot is just as much a part of the excursion as visual—and graphic!—reflection on summer vacations, wanderlust, and the necessity of leaving places and countries behind.

Notes:
Two overnight stays in Bremerhaven are planned.
