Course
(The introductory sessions for the ceramics workshop will take place on April 16 and April 23. Participation in both introductory sessions is required; otherwise, you will not be able to continue in this course.
Opportunities for independent work in the ceramics workshop are available on other weekdays by arrangement.)
The seminar begins with an introduction to basic techniques and ways of working with clay, as well as working in the ceramics studio. In the next step, we will explore the specific properties of clay and fired ceramics. Through experimentation, we will discover processes and forms that go beyond conventional functional ceramics.
Students will develop ceramic forms capable of catching, absorbing, channeling, and transferring water to a neighboring ceramic sculpture created by a fellow student. Through communication and collaboration, students will each create their own individual ceramic sculptures for an ensemble of diverse ceramic forms that enables a water feature. In this way, a jointly developed, cohesive installation emerges.
Museum visits, presentations, and discussions complement and enrich the course. During a visit to the August Kestner Museum, we’ll learn more about ceramics, a material that has been used by humans for thousands of years. We’ll search for objects designed for storing or transporting liquids.
Working with clay requires a great deal of time and patience, both in learning about the material’s properties and how to work with it, as well as during the drying and firing processes. For this reason, it is necessary to work continuously in the studio beyond the official class hours.
At the conclusion of the course, an exhibition of the ceramic objects is planned in the exhibition space of POMP Studios in Hannover Hainholz.
